Lady Vols look good in first exhibition

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee Lady Vol basketball team opened the season with a 104-49 exhibition win over Carson-Newman at Thompson-Boling Arena on Wed., Nov. 1.

Junior Alexis Hornbuckle was among six Lady Vols in double-digit scoring as she tossed in a team-leading 21 points and added seven assists and five steals, all in 29 minutes of action. Senior Dominique Redding added 20 points on nine of 11 shooting, while Nicky Anosike dropped in 18 and Candace Parker added a dozen. Junior college transfer Shannon Bobbitt and sophomore Alex Fuller added 11 each.

All dressed Lady Vols saw playing time and nine different athletes scored. Former manager Elizabeth Curry scored in her first game in a Lady Vol uniform.

The Lady Vols forced 36 Lady Eagle turnovers, six shy of the all-time record of 42.

The Big Orange were a smoking 43-of-73 from the field, including 4-of-9 from beyond the arc.

"I told our team that we did a lot of good things tonight," said Lady Vol head coach Pat Summitt. "Shannon did a great job at the point, pushing the tempo. We established our inside game and that was a priority for us. It was good to see our team be as aggressive defensively as we thought we would be. I liked what I saw, but we can still get better."

Tonight's win marked the 16th consecutive victory over an exhibition opponent. Tennessee is now 30-3 in home exhibition tilts. The Lady Vols have crossed the century mark the last three years in exhibition games against Carson-Newman.

Tennessee improves to 17-2 all-time against the visitors from Jefferson City, Tenn. Three of those wins have come in exhibition contests.
