Tennessee freshman C Kelley Cain to have knee surgery, redshirt

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennessee freshman center Kelley Cain will undergo knee surgery and redshirt for the season, team trainers said after the No. 1 Lady Vols beat No. 4 North Carolina 83-79 on Sunday night.

Cain twisted her right knee when she landed on another player's foot during a practice in early November. She has been experiencing swelling and irritation ever since and will have surgery on Tuesday, Lady Vols trainer Jenny Moshak said.

"I just hate it for Kelley and our team," coach Pat Summitt said. "We will definitely miss her presence."

Cain missed several preseason workouts after suffering a concussion during practice. She played in Tennessee's second exhibition game against Carson-Newman, scoring 11 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.

"She worked extremely hard this summer and was making an impression in practice before she went out with her concussion," Summitt said. "When we got her back on the floor, Kelley looked good going after the ball and getting a dozen rebounds in our game with Carson-Newman."

The 6-foot-6 Atlanta native was a 2007 McDonald's and Parade All-American.

Sophomore point guard Cait McMahan is also sitting out the season to recover from a June surgery on her right knee and is expected to redshirt.
