2006 SEC Women's Basketball Awards Announced

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Southeastern Conference announced its 2006 women's basketball postseason awards Tuesday, highlighted by LSU's Seimone Augustus being named Player of the Year for the second consecutive year and Tennessee's Candace Parker being named Freshman of the Year. First-team and second-team All-SEC honorees, All-Freshman team, along with Player, Coach and Freshman, Defensive Player, 6th Woman and Scholar-Athlete of the Year were chosen by the league's 12 coaches.

Augutus, along with teammate Sylvia Fowles and Georgia duo Tasha Humphrey and Sherill Baker were unanimous first-team members. Rounding out the first-team were Parker, Armintie Price of Ole Miss, Dalila Eshe of Florida, Tennessee's Shanna Zolman and Vanderbilt's Dee Davis.

Baker was also named Defensive Player of the Year, while Vanderbilt's Liz Sherwood was named 6th Woman of the Year.

Florida's Sarah Lowe was named the SEC Women's Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Kentucky's Mickie DeMoss, in her third season as head coach of the Wildcats was named SEC Coach of the Year. This season UK finished the regular season with a 20-7 overall record and the fourth seed of the tournament after going 9-5 in conference play.

The 2006 SEC Women's Basketball Tournament begins Thursday, March 2 and runs through Sunday, March 5 in North Little Rock, Ark. SEC's regional sports network (FSN South, FSN Southwest and FSN Florida) will televise all games on Thursday, Friday and Saturday while ESPN2 will broadcast the championship game at 6 p.m. ET.
